Most people have experienced stress in some way. Stress can have various effects on your well-being and happiness. Remember that you are just as important as the things you do and the others you care for. Take care of yourself, breathe, take a moment to relax or meditate, and decompress in order to manage daily stresses.

May - Memorial Day

Content: Memorial Day is an important day of remembrance and reflection. It is a time to honor the sacrifices of those who have served our country, and to renew our commitment to the values of freedom, democracy, and equality that they fought to protect.

Many of us will celebrate by attending parades, barbeques, and other outdoor events with friends and family. However, it's important to remember the true meaning of the holiday and to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Whatever your plans may be for Memorial Day, take a moment to reflect on the bravery and dedication of those who have served in the military and how they have helped to protect the freedoms and values that we hold dear.

June - National Safety Month

Title: National Safety Month

Content: June is National Safety Month and is observed to focus on how we can keep our workplace and environment safe and prevent injuries so everyone can live their lives to the fullest. The National Safety Council is the founder of National Safety Month and focuses on various safety topics throughout the month, providing resources to identify risks and assist in creating safe environments for everyone.

Here are some ways you can participate in National Safety Month:

  1. Conduct a home fire drill - test your fire alarms and plan what to do in case of a fire.
  2. Update your first-aid kit - make sure you are prepared for unforeseen emergencies by stocking up on bandages, ointments, gauze, aspirin, gloves, etc.
  3. Check your medicine cabinet - make sure you remove and replace expired medications.

July - Independence Day

Title: Hooray for the Red, White and Blue

Content: Independence Day is an important symbol of American patriotism and freedom. It's a time to reflect on our country's history and to come together and celebrate the values that make America great.

Here are some ways to celebrate:

  • Freedom Park is hosting a community field day with family-friendly activities, face-painting, live music, and fireworks.
  • The downtown YMCA is having a community parade. Decorate your trikes, bikes, wagons and strollers and walk down main street to show off your creativity and patriotism.
  • Catch some rays at the river. The city is hosting an Independence Day event at the river with water sports, concerts, food trucks and fireworks.

August - National Wellness Month

Title: Wishing You Well

Content: August is National Wellness Month! Wellness is more than avoiding germs or not being sick. The Global Wellness institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. Holistically, wellness includes six dimensions: physical wellness, emotional wellness, spiritual wellness, social wellness, intellectual wellness, and occupational wellness. Below are some company-sponsored and supported events that we encourage you to attend. An email will be sent to our company-wide distribution list with information on how to sign up.

  1. Book Club: Grandma Gatewood's Walk, the inspiring true story of the woman who saved the Appalachian Trail, by Ben Montgomery will be the book for this month. 
  2. Friday Fitness: Every Friday at 4:30 pm, we will be hosting a 30-minute fitness class in the warehouse. No weights or special gear needed.
  3. Mid-day Meditation: every Tuesday and Thursday at 1 pm we will have a 15-minute online meditation class.
  4. Social Society: Saturday night social activities including miniature golf, bowling, pickle ball and a themed outdoor escape room.
  5. Cooking Class: Learn how to cook healthy and nutritious meals for the whole family.

September - School Starts

School is back in session this month for many of us and our children. We believe learning is growing and encourage this both personally and professionally. We want everyone to grow into their fullest potential and support this in following ways.

  1. If you have a child in elementary, intermediate/middle or high school, please fill out the Back-to-School form in the employee portal and submit to HR to be gifted with a $50 gift card to help purchase whatever your child needs for the school year.
  2. We have a tuition reimbursement program for full-time employees that have been with the company for at least 1 year of consecutive service. To participate, you can download our Tuition Reimbursement Policy and application from the employee portal.
  3. Explore and apply to our job-postings found on LinkedIn and posted to our Company Teams room.
  4. Wisdom Wednesday - remember to join our bi-weekly Wisdom Wednesday to learn new skills or tools from your colleagues. Let HR know if you'd like to be a presenter and what your topic will be so we can add it to the schedule.

October - Global Diversity Awareness Month

Content: October is Global Diversity Awareness Month. We believe that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) are the hallmarks of a great company and strengthen a company's culture significantly. We encourage DE&I in every aspect of our organization and will be hosting two virtual DE&I lunch and learns this month on October 12th and 26th from 12 pm to 1 pm. Invites will be sent to the company-wide email distribution list, and we encourage everyone to attend.

Let's use this month as an opportunity to cultivate more gratitude in our lives and spread kindness to those around us. Take time this month to send recognition, make a phone call, or do something kind for someone you appreciate.
